A 24 year-old woman has been booked into the Imperial County Jail after corrections officials caught her trying to smuggle about 40.75 grams of methamphetamine into the Calipatria State Prison.
Sources say the drugs had a prison value of nearly $41,000.
Authorities say that Rosa Alvarez had traveled to the facility to visit an inmate, but seemed very nervous and edgy while she was there. Jail staff then saw her pass some sort of object to him. Alvarez was handcuffed almost immediately and taken to another part of the detention center.
They then searched the inmate, who is serving time after being sentenced on murder charges. He was still holding the large bundle of drugs in his hand.
That man has since been transferred to the prison’s administrative segregation unit; Alvarez was taken tot he Imperial County Jail in order to be booked and processed. She remains in custody on undisclosed bail bonds.
