A spokesperson at the El Centro Jail has confirmed that Aurora High School teacher Tommy Obeso is being detained at their facility in lieu 0f $100,000 bail.
Obeso was arrested last week in a sting effort between the El Centro Police Department and the US Department of Homeland Security Investigations’ cyber crime unit. Authorities have alleged the defendant has been soliciting underage girls for sex for a long period of time. Many of his victims are reported to be between 16 and17 years of age. Investigators believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward. Anyone who has additional information pertaining to the defendant’s crimes is being asked to contact police.
Authorities say an investigation was launched shortly after Obeso began working at Aurora High School. Several complaints had been received from students who said he had been behaving inappropriately. Several of his former students were interviewed by the school’s principle. They confirmed the teacher had frequently made sexual advances toward them and would attempt to touch or kiss them in an inappropriate manner.
The principal decided to contact local authorities. Police decided to create a fake social media profile page in an attempt to capture the defendant. Obeso reportedly contacted the fictitious teen and was very forward about wanting to arrange an in-person meeting so they could engage in sex.
He drove to a believed meeting site late last week with the intention of seducing the underage girl. He was instead met by uniformed officers and was arrested on the spot. The defendant remains in custody in lieu of $100,000 bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned later this week.
