A spokesperson for the El Centro Jail has confirmed the facility is detaining a 24 year-old man who was arrested for possession a concealed firearm. Authorities say defendant Jonathan Marin is accused of threatening another individual with bodily injury.
The incident took place last weekend at about 2:45 in the morning. It was during that time that Marin approached a group of people who were hanging out in someone’s back yard. He attempted to coerce one of the men to fight him. The fight did not take place and the defendant left the scene. A passerby overheard him calling an unidentified person and requesting that person bring him a gun.
Police were called and arrived to the area within minutes. Marin was arrested and a Glock-style firearm was confiscated. He is being detained at the El Centro Jail on an undisclosed bail amount. It is unclear whether the incident was gang related.
Local authorities said this is not the only crime they are investigating.
A $1,300 bicycle was stolen from a home on East Holt. Avenue. The bike was reportedly chained to a tree and the suspect is believed to have removed the chain using bolt cutters. That person remains at large.
El Centro Jail officials said they are also detaining a man who is accused of trying to smuggle marijuana over the US / Mexico border. That person was said to be in possession of 5 pounds of pot at the time he was taken into custody.
People who are accused of trying to bring illegal substances over the border will be charged with a federal crime. Imperial County Jail inmates who are being held on a federal offense will want to contact an expert federal bondsman for assistance in arranging their release.
El Centro jail officials have not released the name of this defendant. Bail information was not immediately available.
