A 48 year-old Calexico man who is believed to have stolen upward of 70 veterans’ memorial plaques from an area monument has been booked into the Imperial County Jail.
Calexico Police Department officials say the man, Ricardo Quinonez is a transient in the area and may have been pilfering the bronze plaques to sell to scrap yards.
A spokesperson for the El Centro Jail said he is being charged with grand theft. Bail bonds information was not immediately available but it’s believed the now-defendant will need to post between $20,000 and $30,000 bail in order to be released from custody pending trial.
Since Quinonez is a transient, the bondsman will likely want to work with a close friend or family member in order to guarantee his appearance. They are also likely to require the signer to post collateral in order to guarantee the value of the bail bond.
Local veteran groups say they will work to raise money to replace the stolen plaques and to repair others that were damaged.
