A spokesperson for the Imperial County Sheriff’s Department have confirmed that five suspected illegal immigrants were booked into the El Centro Jail on drug charges.
The incident took place late last week, when border patrol agents took note of a group of men illegally hopped a fence from Mexico into the US, and proceeded to make a run for it.
The immigrants were carrying backpacks, according to a law enforcement spokesperson, and when the agent caught up with them, they quickly learned the bags were filled with marijuana. The suspects said they were told to pass the pot off to a man who would have a parked vehicle waiting at a set point on Interstate 8.
That man was spotted quickly and was taken into custody. Authorities say that suspect is a legal US citizen.
The Imperial County Sheriff’s Department said they seized more than 200 pounds of marijuana and that all of the defendants are facing a slew of drug charges.
