This escape-attempt is unrelated to a Jan 2016 incident that took place in Orange County, where three men managed to escape from another county lock-up. Those fugitives have also been taken back into custody.
In the Imperial County incident, law enforcement officials said they realized that 26 year-old Rafael Gomez was missing during a routine headcount. Although it was initially speculated he may have been sent to work at a nearby agricultural field, those suspicions turned out to be wrong.
The exact details of his capture have not been released, but jailers did confirm that man has been re-arrested. Authorities have not indicated how the inmate was able to pull off the escape.
This is the second time in the past year that an inmate has been able to escape from the Imperial County jails, sources say.
