A man who is believed to have stolen a van and evading police is being held at the El Centro Jail on $25,000 bail.
Jose Antonia Garcia is being charged with assault with a deadly weapon, grand theft auto, hit and run and possession of stolen property. He is also facing an additional felony count of evading police. A spokesperson for the El Centro Police Department said they responded to a call pertaining to a stolen Ford van earlier this week. The officers who responded to the alert spotted the van parked a short distance from the scene of the crime and attempted to pull it over.
Police say the driver made no attempt to yield. He instead led police on a four-minute chase through local streets. Vehicle speeds reportedly reached upward of 80 miles per hour during that time, they said. The van eventually spun out and hit a tree and mailbox. Defendant Garcia exited the vehicle and behaved in a manner which led the responding officers to believe they were being threatened. Several officers fired shots but the suspect was not hit. The suspect was eventually taken into custody and transported to the El Centro Jail to be booked and processed. He has not yet posted bond and his arraignment is pending.
