The El Centro Police Department and El Centro Jail have been quite busy in the past week, with numerous arrests and bookings haven taken place.
The week kicked off when a 44 year-old male was arrested on suspicion of stealing copper wire. Defendant Victor Herrera was taken into custody a short time later without incident. He was booked into the El Centro Jail and is being charged with grand theft. His bail is believed to have been set between $10,000 and $20,000 depending on the quantity of wire he unlawfully obtained.
The following day nearly $2,000 worth of tools were stolen from a storage shed in the back yard of a local home. The suspect is still at large. If captured he or she will likely have their bail set between $10,000 and $20,000.
The Westmoreland Police then arrested a man who attempted to flee from a traffic stop. Defendant Joseph Moreno led officers on a brief pursuit. He did not succeed in his attempts to evade capture and was taken into custody at the Redondo Apartments.
At the time he was booked into the El Centro Jail he was reported to be found to have numerous, individual-sized packages of methamphetamine on his person. Approximately half an ounce of the drug was also located inside his backpack. Other paraphernalia and a digital scale were also confiscated from the satchel.
Moreno is being charged with numerous felonies including possession of a controlled substance for sale, felony transportation of narcotics, possession of a controlled substance inside a jail, resisting arrest, possession of drugs with the intent to distribute and numerous other misdemeanor charges. It is believed his bail amount was set in excess of $60,000 based on the quantity of methamphetamine in his possession at the time of his arrest. It is unclear whether he remains in custody at this time.
