A spokesperson for the Imperial County Jail has confirmed they are detaining two suspects who are accused of selling drugs. The men were arrested after a surveillance operation took place at the Calipatria State Prison. Investigators learned that at least one of the suspects had engaged in throwing bags of cell phones and drugs into a minimum security area of the facility.
Prison staff confirmed seeing the man approach a fence that surrounds the detention center. They noticed he was carrying a bag similar to ones that had been confiscated in the past. The suspect was arrested on the spot. His current bag contained nearly 60 grams of heroin, a dozen cell phones and 93 grams of methamphetamine.
A second suspect attempted tried to speed off in the northbound lanes of Highway 101. Prison staff were able to provide an accurate description of the vehicle to other local law enforcement agencies. The suspect was spotted a short time later and was arrested without incident. A minor was reportedly found in the car. They have since been released to Child Protective Services.
Defendants Georg Kazanjran and William Arreola remain in custody at the Imperial County Jail pending arraignment. Arreola is currently out on parole and is believed to have a no-bail hold. Bail information for Kazanjran was not immediately available. It is unclear whether the pair acted alone or if they are part of a larger drug ring. The investigation is ongoing.
