In LA County, phone scammers pretend to be calling on behalf of a utility company.
In other areas of the country, they’ll say they work with law enforcement or with a bail bonds company and unless you wire money right away, you run the risk of being arrested.
But now, the Calexico Police Department says these con artists have a new, especially terrifying ploy to get your cash. And considering how close the community is to the border, the fear factor alone is hitting victims hard.
It all starts with a curious call to you home or cell phone- and once you pick up, the caller claims to have kidnapped one of your family members. They then say the only way you’ll ever get to see them again is if you send thousands of dollars in ransom money.
Both the Calexico PD and the Imperial County Sheriff’s Department say that if you receive this type of call to contact law enforcement immediately.
