A representative within the Calexico Police Department said their search for a new Chief is ongoing. The position has been vacant since mid-February when former Chief Jim Neujahr left the post. The city council earlier selected a panel of five people who were charged with spearheading the process. Each member was asked to choose one candidate. Each of those candidates has since been interview. Two have been eliminated.
The panel will be asked to reduce the candidate pool to one. That person will then be screened by the city council and the city manager. A decision will be made after this process is complete. Local elected officials have not said when they expect the new Calexico Police Department Chief to be hired. They are hopeful it will be sooner than later.
A front runner has already been announced. Candidate Pompeyo Tabarez has a longstanding career in law enforcement. He recently retired from the Imperial County Sheriff’s Department after serving for more than 36 years. Since his retirement he has been teaching classes at the Imperial Valley College.
Tabarez has not made any public comments about his candidacy. He has, though, reportedly said the process has been lengthy and thoughtful, and that he feels that the elected officials are taking the proper steps in screening those who have thrown their hats in the ring.
Residents are hopeful a final decision will be made before the end of the month.
