A spokesperson for the Calexico Police Department has confirmed they have finally selected a new Chief of Police. The city council has voted 3-2 in favor of hiring Pompeyo Tabarez. Not everyone is pleased with this decision. There have been a number of outspoken community members who have disapproved of this candidate. The two dissenting council members agreed with them.
A number of pre-employment checks will need to be finalized before Tabarez officially comes on board. This includes a background check. Some elected officials said there should have been more citizen input during the selection process. Others said if they wanted citizen input they should have sought those opinions out early on in the process. One community member has confirmed they have heard rumors of Tabarez’s pending hire long before the previous chief retired.
The Calexico Police Department has been in a formal process of hiring their new leader for the past several months. Approximately four candidates made it into the final selection pool. Some members of the public have requested that selection process procedures be made public. Elected officials have said that information is confidential. Those who backed Tabarez are confident he will stand up to unions and will not play favorites. He is hopeful to increase Calexico Police Department’s staffing to levels seen in previous years. Other goals reportedly include minimizing traffic congestion and accidents, and becoming involved in the Parent’s Athletic League.
It is unclear when Tabarez will officially start.
